From our work driving the central government’s annual homeless report to our studies of what it takes to provide housing to vulnerable populations, KISHU is at the forefront of the effort to ensure everyone has that most basic of human needs: safe, decent and affordable housing
KISHU Associates Addresses Complex Issues through;
Asset Building and Financial Capability
The Drivers of Economic Security
KISHU studies the drivers of economic inclusion. Our insights lead to more effective policies, programs and interventions. How can consumers make better purchasing decisions? What is their experience with credit? How can housing counseling support sustainable homeownership? How can financial literacy programs encourage asset-building and promote equity across populations? We see answers to questions like these as vital to the well-being of low-, moderate-, and middle-income Ugandans.
Homelessness
Reducing and Preventing Homelessness
KISHU Associates’ research and technical assistance aims to reduce and prevent homelessness in Uganda. We help policymakers understand the magnitude and causes of homelessness and measure the impact and cost-effectiveness of solutions. We work closely with government agencies to improve their grantees’ effectiveness. We also help communities and nonprofits build capacity to manage prevention and assistance programs. Our support helps communities transform systems, implement homeless management information systems, and measure performance
Guaranteed Income
Cash as Policy
To improve their quality of life, people need adequate financial resources and the freedom to determine how best to use them. Governments and community-based organizations are experimenting with providing program participants with recurring cash payments as a guaranteed income. The goal is to overcome systemic inequalities, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the more precarious nature of modern work which includes the threat of automation and artificial intelligence replacing many jobs or simply to provide more direct, effective support. Through evaluation partnerships and thought leadership, Abt is helping to build the evidence base on guaranteed income and its potential role in safety net policies. Our approach combines a commitment to person-centered and equitable work with our expertise on existing social programs and a wide range of mixed methods evaluation techniques. As a result, foundations, nonprofits, cities, states, and the federal government have learned to count on us to make a difference.
Housing & Communities
Transforming Neighborhoods and Communities
KISHU Associates helps transform neighborhoods and communities. We provide guidance and training to address complex problems effectively. Our evaluations improve local and federal investments, and our quantitative studies measure impact.
KISHU’s technical assistance provides communities with cross-cutting guidance and training, facilitates community-wide planning processes and disaster recovery, and builds local capacity. The goal: to promote healthy and sustainable neighborhoods.
Building Strong Communities
A safe, healthy home in a strong, sustainable community undergirds a good life. The right mix of practices and policies extends these conditions to more people. Kishu helps shape housing and community revitalization practices and policy.
Housing
As a Platform for Well-Being
The Health Benefits of Stable Housing
Good health and stable, well-located housing are inextricably linked. KISHU’s work on housing as a platform for well-being looks at the ways homes and neighborhoods contribute to healthy outcomes for older adults, children and people with disabilities. Evidence shows stable housing in safe, low-poverty neighborhoods sometimes is the best medicine. Stable housing has also been shown to lead to better school performance and behavior among children.
